The National Environment Agency (NEA) introduces their latest annual “Clean Public Toilets Campaign” and plans to implement a toilet cleanliness module for primary school students in 2024.

The Clean Public Toilets Campaign is a noteworthy initiative led by the NEA. Over the years, the campaign has been themed to draw attention to the importance of public sanitation awareness and specifically, the cleanliness of public toilets in Singapore.

The historical significance of the campaign traces back to the strides it has made in influencing community hygiene attitudes. This year’s theme, phrased as “Are you nice when no one’s around? Do it right for everyone,” emphasizes social consciousness and the importance of maintaining cleanliness in shared public spaces.

Primary school students are set to be heavily engaged in the 2023 campaign with the introduction of a new toilet cleanliness module in the Buddy Clean Workshop. This innovative addition to the curriculum, scheduled for early 2024, aims to inculcate hygiene practices and underline the importance of public cleanliness from a young age.

The NEA’s proactive measures towards improving public sanitation do not stop at advocacy campaigns. Integral environmental policies such as the Environmental Public Health Act, paired with effective toilet improvement programs, are a testament to the agency’s commitment towards higher public health standards.

Over the years, NEA has been making effort in improving public toilets for Singapore. Features such as sensor taps, fans, centralised soap dispenser systems, and certified hand dryers have been introduced to public toilets in hawker centres.
