A group of friends who rented a Tribecar faced a major hiccup to their Johor Bahru day trip after their vehicle broke down, resulting in a S$407 towing fee and a plea for a refund.

A group of unfortunate Singaporeans who likely anticipated stress-free driving in Malaysia witnessed their rented vehicle from Tribecar sputter to a halt on November 27. The passengers experienced a series of complications that included a malfunctioning air conditioner that “spewed hot air” and a suspiciously stiff steering wheel just after they crossed the immigration custom into Malaysia.

Thankfully, a fellow Singaporean who lives in Johor Bahru drove by and stopped to help. After a quick inspection of the Tribecar, he diagnosed the cause of breakdown as a faulty alternator.

Tribecar, on their part, maintains that the vehicle had been dutifully serviced just days before, on November 23, with all parts, including the battery and alternator, reportedly in working condition. The rental firm, however, admit that car breakdowns can happen despite thorough maintenance.

The unfortunate group, who had to cut short their Johor Bahru day trip and find their way back home via public transportation, are now seeking a full refund from Tribecar, inclusive of the booking and hefty towing charges.

Tribecar advises users to perform pre-trip checks, including the engine oil, tyre condition, and coolant levels. To mitigate future incidents like these, Tribecar also advises users to patronise their appointed vendors in Malaysia in case of a breakdown.
