Changi Airport’s Terminal 2, famed for its world-class passenger experience, has reopened with a shiny digital waterfall, improved baggage systems, a new garden, and much more.

Our very own Changi Airport is no stranger to lauds and accolades. More than an aviation hub, it’s a symbol of our nation’s constant desire to grow and modernise, pushing boundaries with every expansion. It’s embedded in our nation’s DNA to strive, to thrive. And, the latest upgrade of Terminal 2 is a prime example of that.

With a four-storey digital waterfall named ‘The Wonderfall’ and a garden titled ‘Dreamscape’ waiting for you at the departure, you can imagine you’re not quite leaving yet. And when it’s finally time, the new automated baggage systems make the send-off smoother and the special assistance lanes make it a stress-free experience for all.

The growth doesn’t stop here. Look ahead, and you’d see shiny provisions made for future expansions, ready to welcome the world to our island nation.

Have you ever wondered about the story behind Changi Airport—its evolution, expansion, and constant strive to remain on top? Let’s dive in and explore!

This exciting tale began when Terminal 2, fondly known as T2, underwent expansion in an effort to increase its handling capacity. As of now, the airport’s yearly capacity stands at a whopping 90 million passengers, all thanks to the added over 21,000 sq m of space—about the size of three football fields!

And, the result? As per a report by The Straits Times, T2 reopened fully, ahead of schedule, serving sixteen airlines and connecting travellers to forty cities around the globe.

Part of this grand redesign includes impressive technological advancements. The newly inaugurated automated baggage-handling system ensures minimal mishandling with its real-time tracking feature. This highly efficient system, according to Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, will “minimize mishandling” and is integral to the overall operation of T2.

To further elevate passenger experience, T2’s expansion also introduced a greater number of automated check-in kiosks, bag-drop machines, and an automated early luggage storage system. Not to forget, T2 now boasts the first automated special assistance lanes at Changi Airport for people with disabilities and families with young children—a consideration that truly speaks volumes about our commitment to inclusivity.

But, Changi is not just about planes; it’s an ecosystem—a beautiful coexistence of nature and modernisation. The new garden in the departure transit area, ‘Dreamscape’, is proof of this. It blends digital content with over 20,000 plants from 100 species and even a fish pond! An immersive experience, passengers can walk over the pond on a transparent platform while tuning in to audio recordings of various bird species, insects and other creatures.

This balancing act of blending technology with nature not only enhances the overall airport environment but also promotes a feeling of calmness and relaxation among passengers—a much needed break during stressful travels.

The economic implications of the airport’s expansion are staggering. With the terminal serving 16 airlines and connecting travellers to over 40 cities, it’s attracting more tourists, creating employment opportunities, and contributing to Singapore’s GDP.

As Senior Minister Teo mentioned, the plan is to “add 50 million passengers to Changi Airports yearly capacity by the mid-2030s”—a testament to growing business opportunities and tourism potential.

Among international standards, Singapore’s Changi Airport continues to shine. In view of airport services, retail options and overall passenger experience; Changi challenges if not outshines many top-notch airports. The new retail outlets introduced in T2 adds to that. From the pop-up of collectible merchandise store Funko to the exciting robot bartender at Lotte Duty-Free Wines and Spirits, it is a shopper’s paradise.

Also, Changi is ahead of the curve when it comes to incorporating technology for better passenger service. With features such as real-time baggage tracking system and automated special assistance lanes, it’s swift, efficient, and embraces the future.

Since May 2022, passenger traffic at Changi Airport stands at near pre-pandemic levels with nearly 10 million passengers passing through T2. These figures, provided by Changi Airport Group (CAG), act as a promising sign of recovery and growth, reinstating confidence in the future of air travel.
