Phishing scams in Singapore are on the rise with the latest involving one impersonating the names “iShopChangi” and “Rimowa”.
At least 19 individuals with losses amounting over S$7,000 in this month of December. The scammers employed Facebook ads selling premium luggage at prices as low as $4, using trusted names like “iShopChangi” and “Rimowa”. Through these ads, victims found themselves on phishing sites, leading to unauthorized transactions on their cards.
Phishing tactics have evolved, but they come with red flags that could help us spot trouble before it escalates. Overly attractive promotions, such as branded travel luggage for as low as S$4, should raise immediate suspicion. Verification of website legitimacy is as crucial as inspecting an email sender’s address, ensuring we avoid falling into these scams.
The police advises the public to adopt precautionary measures to avoid falling for such phishing scams. We can protect ourselves through apps like ScamShield to screen through messages, and by adding additional security features like two-factor authentication for our online banking or payment apps. Setting transaction limits on internet banking also adds a strong layer of defence, securing our personal information and financial assets from scammers.
