The search for a 49 year old Singaporean man swept away in Desaru ended early morning of 28 December. He has drowned.
On the 27th of December 2023, the father and his son were swept away by the waves while doing recreational activities on a beach near the resort hotel, Pantai The Westin Desaru Coast, in Desaru, Malaysia.
Penawar Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Masri Ibrahim confirmed to Lianhe Zaobao that the body of the missing man was found. A member of the public found him at the beach area of another resort hotel, One and Only Desaru Coast, at 5:30am on Dec. 28, 2023, Masri said. The cause of death was drowning and the family has identified his body.
The 16-year-old son reportedly was swept away by the strong undercurrents while swimming too. He was rescued by members of the public.
The Desaru Coast’s resort hotel will be closing its doors until the 8th of January 2024 to reassess its safety measures, in hopes of preventing such tragedies in the future.
