A recent incident involving a Singaporean woman who was confronted for carrying durians on a bus went viral online.

The woman, instead of alighting from the bus as requested by the bus captain, decided to discard the durian by throwing it out of the bus. Her action was caught on camera and quickly went viral on social media platforms.

In Singapore, the durian is a subject of stringent public courtesy norms due to its powerful aroma, hence Ministry of Transport prohibits its presence on buses and trains.

Rules of SBS Transit forbid passengers from bringing durians aboard, and non-compliance could be met with a fine of up to S$500.

Furthermore, littering in Singapore is no minor offence; the woman’s disposal of the durian might cost her up to S$2,000 for a first-time conviction.

It’s a reminder to public commuters that while the durian holds a dear place in many hearts, it’s important to keep Singapore’s public transport free of durian’s smell.
