Singapore unveils increased subsidies for chronic medication under Healthier SG’s new Chronic Tier from February 1.
In a bid to ease the financial burden on Singaporeans with chronic medical conditions, the Healthier SG programme is introducing the Chronic Tier, which promises enhanced subsidies starting this February. Patients enrolled in this programme and holding Community Health Assist Scheme (Chas), Pioneer Generation (PG), and Merdeka Generation (MG) cards will now be able to purchase common chronic medications at prices similar to those at polyclinics, directly from their Healthier SG GP clinics.
The Healthier SG’s Chronic Tier addresses a significant gap where patients, while being covered for medication costs by Chas, preferred polyclinics over GP clinics due to more affordable drug prices. With the revised scheme in place, these patients can now access means-tested subsidies of up to 87.5% without a dollar cap limit, including benefits for consultation fees, lab tests, and other types of medicine, subject to an annual limit of up to $360.
Further underlining the substantial aid provided by this initiative, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung stated, “This is an enhanced subsidy for chronic drugs at GP clinics for Healthier SG enrollees who are Community Health Assist Scheme (Chas), Pioneer Generation (PG), and Merdeka Generation (MG) card holders.” The move is seen as a strategic step to align the cost of long-term healthcare support from GP clinics with polyclinics, consequently offering patients a more convenient and financially viable option for managing their chronic conditions.
What’s more, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has made it easier for patients to finance their treatments by allowing the full payment through MediSave savings of up to $500-$700, thereby removing the earlier necessity for a 15% cash co-payment. This can significantly reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for many and is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to supporting patients struggling with long-term healthcare costs.
The readiness of over 1,000 Healthier SG GP clinics to extend the improved subsidy coverage is indicative of the broad reach this healthcare reform seeks to achieve. While a minority of clinics are yet to be fully equipped, they are expected to follow suit shortly, as per MOH’s statement: “More than 1,000 Healthier SG GP clinics will be ready to offer enhanced subsidies for selected medications under the Healthier SG Chronic Tier.”
Approximately 700,000 Singapore residents are already taking advantage of the Healthier SG programme, and with ongoing enrollment, more stand to benefit from these subsidies and the robust support system being pieced together for those living with chronic illnesses. With a focus on prevention, early detection, and better management of chronic diseases, Healthier SG and the Chronic Tier represent cornerstone efforts in Singapore’s healthcare landscape, actively bridging the financial gaps and making healthcare more accessible and affordable.
