Singapore and Malaysia getting more connected with RTS Link construction, enhancing cross-border connectivity.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is set to mark a key milestone today, Jan 11, in the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project. PM’s visit to Johor will witness not just the progress of the RTS Link but also the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) backing the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone’s future.
The RTS Link, the third land connection after the Woodlands Causeway and Tuas Second Link, is on track to commence operations by end 2026. With a capacity to ferry 10,000 passengers hourly in each direction and cutting the cross-border transit to an estimated 15 minutes, this project is expected to significantly ease checkpoint congestion, absorbing 35% of causeway traffic by January 2027.
In May 2023, the RTS project passed the 50% mark of construction works on the Singaporean side. The MOU on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, discussed during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit last October, aims to bolster economic ties by enhancing the flow of goods, investments, and skilled professionals between the nations.
In this official visit to Malaysia, PM Lee will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong, National Development Minister Desmond Lee, Acting Minister For Transport Chee Hong Tat, as well as Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Faishal Ibrahim.
