Amidst the surging demand for cyber-security specialists, Military Expert 4 (ME4) Tan Jia Le, 25, stands out among 122 newly appointed senior military experts within the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). A graduate in information security from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a polytechnic alumnus, ME4 Tan’s unique trajectory involved resisting the allure of the private sector to contribute his expertise in safeguarding Singapore’s critical systems and infrastructure.
His dedication was solidified during national service, where he honed advanced cyber-threat hunting skills, including hands-on experience in incident response and network vulnerability testing. ME4 Tan subsequently transitioned to the SAF’s Command, Control, Communications, and Computers Expert (C4X) scheme.
At the appointment ceremony on Jan 25, ME4 Tan and his peers were officially recognized as senior military experts. He articulated his motivation, stating, “Many of the people graduating from cyber-security courses are heading to the private sector, but I felt there was a need for people to stand up and join the public sector to boost its cyber expertise.” ME4 Tan, awarded the Sword of Honour as the best trainee in his batch, expressed a commitment to public service.
During the ceremony, Senior Minister of State for Defence Heng Chee How underscored the significance of the Military Domain Experts Scheme (MDES) in enhancing the SAF’s capabilities. Launched in 2010, the scheme actively attracts well-qualified professionals, including mid-career individuals, to contribute their expertise in critical military domains such as cyber security, intelligence, engineering, and medical skills.
In response to the evolving nature of warfare, characterized by increased sophistication and hybrid tactics, Mr. Heng highlighted the importance of MDES. He cited examples of unconventional warfare tactics, such as Ukrainian forces modifying hobby drones for surveillance and strike capabilities, emphasizing the need for operational agility in adapting technologies.
The inclusion of mid-career professionals in the SAF contributes depth and rigor to its operations, allowing the armed forces to benchmark their capabilities against industry standards, according to Mr. Heng. Notably, the C4X vocation was introduced in 2019 to bolster the SAF’s cyber-defense capabilities. Recently expanded, it now encompasses digital competencies in software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, and cloud architecture.
The graduating class of 122 comprises individuals from diverse military branches, including the Singapore Army, Republic of Singapore Navy, Republic of Singapore Air Force, and the Digital and Intelligence Service. Among them is ME4 Nabilah Atiqah, 25, who chose an unconventional career as a military medical expert inspired by her elder sister’s role as a nurse.
