The Traffic Police of Singapore have announced plans to activate the speed-enforcement function in red-light cameras starting from April 1. As the police stated on March 31, this initiative is a proactive measure to improve motorists’ behavior on the roads, particularly in areas with a higher incidence of accidents or traffic violations.
Recent statistics have shown an increase in speeding-related fatal accidents. In 2023, these accidents surged by 83.3% compared to the previous year. The proportion of fatal accidents caused solely by speeding rose from 17.3% in 2022 to 25.2% in 2023.
Although the number of speeding violations detected by traffic enforcement cameras decreased by 28.6% (from 73,152 cases in 2022 to 52,237 cases in 2023), there was a concerning 22% increase in speeding violations during police enforcement operations, from 52,016 cases in 2022 to 63,468 cases in 2023. Motorists continue to choose to speed in locations where they believe they would not be caught despite the presence of traffic enforcement cameras.
In a February report, the Traffic Police revealed a significant rise in traffic accident fatalities in 2023, with 136 deaths recorded compared to 108 deaths in 2022, marking a 25.9% increase. Notably, more than half of these fatalities involved motorcyclists and their pillion riders, while nearly 20% were elderly pedestrians.
The Singapore Police Force website lists the 242 locations where red-light cameras are deployed to detect speeding. These red-light cameras, similar to other fixed-enforcement cameras, are distinguished by their orange and white paint scheme and are accompanied by warning signs designating the area as a “Traffic Police Camera Zone.” The road speed limit will also be visibly displayed.
The traffic Police strongly urge motorists to avoid speeding, even in areas without static speed cameras. They emphasize the importance of driving with care, showing graciousness and patience, and adhering to traffic rules. Each driver has a role to play in ensuring road safety. The authorities affirm that appropriate action will be taken against drivers who flout traffic rules, including those who choose to speed.
As the Traffic Police progressively activate the speed-enforcement function in red-light cameras, motorists are urged to be mindful of their road behavior. The goal is to ensure safer roads for all by deterring speeding and promoting responsible driving.
