Tech giant Apple has unveiled its ambitious plans to invest over $250 million (S$340 million) in expanding its Ang Mo Kio campus in Singapore. The expansion will involve upgrading two buildings acquired in 2022, adjacent to Apple’s existing offices. The move is aimed at fostering greater collaboration among Apple’s growing teams and providing space for new roles in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and other key functions, signaling Apple’s strategic focus on these areas.
Construction for the project is set to commence this year. Singapore, as Apple’s central operations center in the region, plays a pivotal role in software, hardware, services, and support. With the new expansion, Apple aims to not only strengthen its job creation efforts but also deepen its connections with the local community, potentially leading to further economic growth and development.
Apple opened its first facility in Singapore in 1981 with just 72 employees, and Its Team has since grown to include over 3,600 individuals. The company’s presence in Singapore supports over 60,000 jobs through direct employment, its supply chain, and the iOS app economy. Apple operates three retail stores in Singapore: Orchard Road, Jewel Changi Airport, and Marina Bay Sands.
Over the past decade, Apple has consistently upgraded its facilities and labs in Singapore. Notably, space in its hardware technologies center has increased by 50% since 2019. The company remains committed to environmental sustainability, with its expanded campus in Ang Mo Kio running entirely on renewable energy, aligning with Apple’s carbon neutral goal since 2020.
Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his pride in the company’s connection with the dynamic Singaporean community of creators, learners, and dreamers. Cook emphasized that the growing campus represents a new chapter in Apple’s history in Singapore and that the Singapore teams have played a significant role in enhancing the lives of Apple’s customers.
In addition to the expansion in Singapore, Apple has also expressed interest in exploring the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in Indonesia. The company has already established app developer academies in the country since 2018. This move aligns with Apple’s continuous efforts to diversify its manufacturing operations and expand its presence in the Southeast Asian region.
Apple’s substantial investment in expanding its Ang Mo Kio campus in Singapore is a testament to the country’s rising prominence as a key hub for the global tech industry.
