Grab announced on its website that it would discontinue its GrabPay Card on June 1. The digital technology and ride-hailing company said users will no longer be able to make online or offline transactions with their digital or physical GrabPay Card starting that date.
Launched in 2019 in partnership with payment technology corporation Mastercard, the GrabPay Card was touted as Asia’s first numberless card. It allowed users to spend using their GrabPay e-wallet balance and offered GrabRewards points for transactions with food and beverage merchants. The card details were stored within the Grab app, which also had a lock card function protected by a personal identification number, allowing users to suspend payments instantly in case of lost cards.
Grab’s decision to discontinue the card comes after an evaluation of its existing financial services. The company observed that other Grab services, such as PayLater and the GrabPay e-wallet, have been more widely adopted and used, thus better meeting the needs of users. Grab is dedicated to refining these alternatives to enhance the user experience.
Effective April 1, Grab will no longer accept new digital or physical GrabPay Card applications. However, users can still request a replacement for the physical card until April 30. Additionally, those who need to activate their physical GrabPay Card can still do so until May 31.
Notably, users can continue earning GrabRewards points with their GrabPay Cards for eligible online and in-store transactions, locally and overseas, until May 31.
Grab has assured users that it will continue assisting with ongoing disputes or investigations until September 30.
