A recent surge in scams promoting fixed deposit schemes with high interest rates has exploited at least 12 individuals, leading to substantial financial losses totaling $650,000 within the first few months of the year.
These fraudulent activities typically commence with unsuspecting victims receiving deceptive SMS messages from scammers utilizing unidentified numbers starting with +65. The messages, crafted to impersonate reputable banking institutions, entice recipients with promises of lucrative fixed deposit schemes featuring unusually high interest rates limited to a specific registration window.
The second phase involves instructing recipients to contact a provided number within the SMS for further details and expressions of interest. Upon making contact, the perpetrators act as legitimate bank representatives, employing deceitful tactics such as furnishing fake staff passes to appear credible.
Under the guise of application processes, victims are coerced into divulging personal information. This information is then used by the scammers to open new bank accounts in the victims’ names. To solidify their deception, scammers send fabricated bank statements to dupe victims into believing the latest accounts have been officially instituted.
The scam’s finale unfolds as victims are directed to transfer funds into these illicitly created accounts. Fraudsters discourage any form of verification by falsely asserting that these transactions are essential prerequisites to account activation procedures.
Ultimately, victims become aware of the scam post-transaction, realizing that their funds have been rerouted to unrelated accounts held by third parties rather than the promised fixed deposit accounts.
