On April 2, at 2:20 a.m., he reached out to his fans through a social media post, clarifying that his previous post declaring his demise was a ruse. The 40-year-old explained that the stunt was meant to highlight the importance of making advance end-of-life arrangements.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had a challenging year, mingled with health alarms and frequent hospital visits, something he shared with his followers. He suffered personal losses, including his pet of 13 years. Having gazed at mortality, he stated, “At the life’s twilight, your accomplishments, no matter how grand, or your stature cannot ward off the inevitable – death.”
The star of ‘All In (2024)’ conveyed that this tryst with mortality raised questions about pre-funeral arrangements, prompting him to compose a song, mastermind a pre-funeral farewell ceremony, and shoot a music video, all of which were destined to be part of a documentary.
In a heartfelt post, Namewee urged his followers to face life and death with courage, pointing out that in many countries, including overseas, it’s common for people to plan their funerals in advance. He emphasized the importance of this practice, encouraging his fans to consider it seriously.
On April 1, at 12:02 a.m., a monochrome picture of Namewee was shared on social media with the inscription “1983-2024.” Subsequently, a bogus obituary intimating a ‘wake’ and a ‘farewell ceremony’ caused a stir.
An image posted in the afternoon showcased a coffin and a montage of his career milestones. Comments flowed in among his followers, with some expressing condolences and others voicing skepticism.
Touched by the concern expressed toward him, Namewee proclaimed he was privileged to “witness his funeral” and “experience unprecedented encounters.” To those who criticized him, he labeled them as ‘fake fans,’ asserting that his faithful followers would understand the event’s significance and that he had conducted more drastic events before.
