In his recent video address, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong proposed a more inclusive understanding of success that surpasses traditional measures of academic achievement and material wealth, emphasizing the value of individuality and collective progress in Singapore.
PM Wong shared his aspiration for Singapore to be a nation where the intrinsic worth of every citizen is acknowledged and celebrated, suggesting a departure from the once-celebrated five Cs—cash, car, credit card, condominium, and country club. Although such metrics have traditionally symbolized prosperity, Wong highlighted the adverse effects of such a narrow view of success, noting the heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and toxic competition it fosters among Singaporeans.
Charting a different course, PM Wong expressed his desire for a Singapore where success is redefined as collectively striving towards the betterment of all, stating, “Success is not a zero-sum game. We are all in this together, and we truly succeed only when we succeed together.” This sentiment reflects a future vision for the country where achievements are broadly recognized, allowing for diverse life paths, including failures and detours, to be equally valued.
Reflecting on feedback from the youth, PM Wong acknowledged the widespread call for a broader definition of success—one that appreciates every individual’s unique skills and talents. He shared his own experiences of feeling constrained by the competitive environment in the government sector and underscored the importance of reevaluating such pressures.
Highlighting the contributions of healthcare workers—beyond just doctors—as pivotal during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wong praised the diverse roles within the healthcare industry as examples of success in various forms. He stressed the importance of dedication and pride in one’s work over conventional measures of status or financial rewards.
PM Wong, who pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, also shared his personal journey. Emphasizing the value of carving out one’s unique path, he encouraged individuals not to be discouraged by setbacks or societal expectations, reinforcing that alternatives and opportunities arise even in the face of failure.
Concluding his message, PM Wong advocated for a cultural shift in recognizing success, urging Singaporeans to value diverse achievements and contributions as foundations of a more inclusive, empathetic society.
