A remarkable incident unfolded when a trainee paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) successfully assisted in the delivery of a baby in a breech position during an ambulance ride to the hospital. The situation, fraught with potential danger, showcased the vital skills and quick thinking required in emergency medical services.
Sergeant Umar Mohamed Sobri Bin Mohammad Khair, now serving as a paramedic for three years, was at that time honing his skills at the Tampines Fire Station. The crucial event occurred in the wee hours of the morning, as he and his team responded to a distress call at around 2.30am. An expectant mother was experiencing intense contractions and was on the verge of giving birth.
With the team’s prompt action, they performed the necessary medical checks both at the woman’s home and subsequently in the ambulance. Despite the initial assessment, the mother soon underwent severe contractions en route to the hospital, which indicated an imminent delivery.
Understanding the gravity of the situation when the baby’s feet first appeared, signaling a breech birth, Sgt Umar realized the risks involved. Drawing upon his training and relying on his mentor’s guidance, he swiftly adapted to the unforeseen circumstances. Demonstrating remarkable competence and calm under pressure, the sergeant successfully navigated the complexities of a breech delivery, ensuring both the mother and baby’s safety.
The successful delivery in such challenging conditions is a testament to the dedication and skill of the SCDF personnel. Alongside Sgt Umar were CPL (NS) Muhamad Affiq Malik, SGT3 Muhammad Aizat Bin Mohamad Salim, and WO1 Muhammad Husnul Bin Halim, all of whom played pivotal roles in ensuring the incident concluded positively.
Another noteworthy incident highlighted by Rescue 995 occurred when Staff Sergeant Ahmad Syafie Bin Sheikh Najib Bagharib and his team faced the daunting task of extinguishing a fire. The blaze, located on the 12th floor of an apartment building at Bedok Reservoir Road, required the responders to race up twelve stories in the early morning. Confronting the towering challenge, they underscored the relentless spirit and physical fortitude inherent to SCDF’s mission to protect and save lives.
