In a harrowing case that came to light in early 2022, Singapore police were dispatched following an alarming social media post showing a teenage boy with low IQ, enduring serious abuse while confined in a hotel room. The distress call was made by the teenager’s sister on January 25, upon recognizing her brother in the distressing image. He was depicted being physically assaulted at just 19 years old.
Led by Assistant Superintendent Andrew Koh from the Clementi Police Division, a significant coordination involving over 50 officers was quickly mobilized. The exhaustive search spanned all night, covering more than 10 hotels close to where the teenager was last seen. According to ASP Koh, the urgency of the situation was palpable, with constant concerns for the victim’s life.
“It was a strenuous challenge; we weren’t certain if he was still alive,” ASP Koh explained in an interview. He emphasized the critical nature of their mission where “each hotel checked brought us closer to potentially saving the teenager.”
Their relentless efforts paid off when, on January 26, 2022, the victim was found at the Arton Boutique Hotel in Lavender. Upon discovery, he was critically injured, suffering from severe burns, fractures, and head trauma.
Following the rescue, the police apprehended four individuals: a 21-year-old man, a 20-year-old woman, and two 16-year-old girls. It emerged during the trial that the abuse stemmed from allegations of inappropriate behavior by the teen, with the suspects admitting to various acts of violence and humiliation against him.
The successful outcome of this case significantly contributed to the Clement Police Division’s recognition as the Best Land Division for the third consecutive year at the Police Day Parade held on June 3, 2024. This recent accolade marks their twelfth such honor, continuing a legacy of excellence that dates back several years.
Beyond this case, the division, led by Assistant Commissioner Serene Chiu and composed of around 650 officers, exerts a profound impact across approximately 390,000 residents in their jurisdiction, reflecting their robust commitment to community and safety.
AC Chiu proudly stated, “This achievement highlights our ongoing commitment and excellence in the duty, thanks to the sheer dedication and professionalism of our team.”
The Division’s prowess was on display again in August 2023, when they effectively managed a drug raid on Sentosa amidst their commitments at the National Day Parade, demonstrating exceptional operational competence and teamwork.
Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean commended the police, stating, “Our officers work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of Singapore, continually evolving to meet new security challenges with dedication and resolve. We owe them our gratitude for their invaluable service.”
