Singaporean households are now eligible to claim their share of $300 in Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers. This initiative allows every household in Singapore to offset their daily expenses by utilizing these vouchers at a wide array of participating locations, including hawkers, heartland merchants, and supermarkets. Divided equally, these vouchers aim to offer support across different sectors of the community.
The allocation of these $300 vouchers, available from June 2024, complements the earlier distribution of $500 vouchers initiated by the then Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on January 3, 2024. This results in a substantial aid of $800 per household for the year 2024, marking a first in the government’s efforts by offering two sets of vouchers within the same calendar year.
At the heart of the 2024 Budget announcements made by Mr. Wong in February was a mix of financial support strategies devised to alleviate cost-of-living pressures and navigate the uncertain economic outlook. This includes a boost to the Assurance Package totaling $1.9 billion, featuring an extra $600 in CDC vouchers. These vouchers are set for disbursement in two phases; the initial $300 being distributed at the end of June 2024, and the subsequent $300 slated for January 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, also serving as the Minister for Trade and Industry, initiated this round of the CDC voucher scheme at the West Coast Community Centre on June 25. Joining him were several key figures, including Mr. Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development and Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration, alongside the mayors.
DPM Gan underscored the total Assurance Package support exceeding $10 billion, evidencing the government’s robust mechanism for aiding Singaporean households, which cumulatively have benefited from $1,300 in CDC vouchers. Further support was showcased through the successful claim of the January 2024 tranche by about 1.3 million households, resulting in over $500 million spent at participating vendors—highlighting the widespread utilization and positive reception of the vouchers.
The origin of the CDC voucher scheme traces back to June 2020, initially aimed at assisting lower-income households amid the pandemic while bolstering local businesses. It later expanded in December 2021, encompassing all households to foster community solidarity and support local enterprises during and post-pandemic challenges.
Amidst ongoing concerns regarding inflation and rising living costs, accentuated by global supply chain issues and geopolitical tensions, the government remains committed to extending the duration and scope of support through the CDC voucher scheme alongside other assistance measures. This includes planned utility bill rebates and a special Cost-of-Living Payment under Budget 2024, set to further ease the financial burdens of Singaporeans.
DPM Gan expressed confidence in the nation’s unity and resilience facing global challenges, emphasizing the various avenues for support, including the substantial participation of hawkers and heartland merchants in the CDC voucher scheme.
How to redeem your CDC vouchers
From June 25, Singaporean households will receive a notification letter via mail on how to claim and spend their $300 CDC vouchers for June 2024. This process remains similar to previous tranches where only one household member is required to visit go.gov.sg/cdcv and log in with the person’s Singpass to claim the digital vouchers on behalf of the household.
Upon claiming, the applicant will receive an SMS with a unique voucher link from “RedeemSG” (before July 1) or “gov.sg” (from July 1 onwards) to the applicant’s registered mobile number, which can then be shared with other household members. The SMS links for January 2024’s CDC vouchers and June 2024’s CDC vouchers are different, and both sets of vouchers are valid until Dec 31, 2024.
Those facing difficulties with the digital claiming process can get help at community centres or clubs (CCs) and SG Digital Community Hubs. For the first two weeks after the launch, the Community Development Councils will be engaging close to 240 youth and student volunteers, who will be stationed at selected CCs, together with CDC ambassadors, to help Singaporeans with the claiming process. From June 25 to July 8, SG Digital Office ambassadors and about 50 Silver Infocomm Wellness Ambassadors will also be deployed at CCs to provide assistance for residents who need help to claim their digital vouchers.
