Elderly woman overcome by hot weather outside Heartbeat@Bedok, polyclinic staff to the rescue

Staff from Bedok Polyclinic Swiftly Aid Senior Citizen Afflicted by Intense Heat at Heartbeat@Bedok

An urgent medical incident outside Heartbeat@Bedok was swiftly addressed when an elderly lady suffered from the severe heat on July 13. She was promptly attended to and subsequently hospitalized.

Witness to the event, Mark, commendably documented the occurrence and circulated photographs illustrating the scene where the lady appeared to be supported by an older gentleman while medical personnel from the adjacent Bedok Polyclinic provided immediate medical assistance at around 11:20 AM. Visible in the photographs was medical apparatus laid out beside the woman.

Mark extended his appreciation towards the good Samaritans of Bedok for their quick response in alerting the medical team from Bedok Polyclinic to assist the stricken woman. Mark further praised the doctor and a team of five nurses for rushing to the scene and delivering exemplary and devoted service.

Situated within the Heartbeat@Bedok complex, the SingHealth-run Bedok Polyclinic confirmed that their staff provided the necessary care until the ambulance, which was called by the facility’s management, transported the woman to Changi General Hospital.

In response to the accolades received, representatives from Bedok Polyclinic expressed their gratitude and acknowledgement for the positive feedback.

While Singapore’s Meteorological Service noted that the first half of July did not experience the sweltering highs of the prior month, it did record a day when temperatures soared above 34 degrees Celsius. The forecast predicted that the remaining days of July would typically see peak temperatures hovering between 33 to 34 degrees Celsius, with possibilities of the mercury inching just over 34 degrees on sporadic days.

Such extreme temperatures have a more pronounced effect on seniors as they are less capable of regulating their body heat due to diminished sweating. Doctors, as cited by The Straits Times, have also explained that the elderly population experiences decreased blood flow to the skin, which hinders the body’s process of heat dispersion from the core to the skin.
