At a cadre members conference on Sunday (Jun 30) held at HUONE Singapore, the Workers’ Party (WP) of Singapore reaffirmed its leadership team, with Pritam Singh and Sylvia Lim maintaining their roles as secretary-general and chairwoman, respectively. In addition, former Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC) Member of Parliament, Lee Li Lian, made a comeback as a Central Executive Committee (CEC) member after stepping down in 2021.
The conference saw a total of 14 individuals elected into the CEC, the Party’s principal decision-making body, during the event at HUONE Singapore in Clarke Quay. Noteworthy members reappointed include Ang Boon Yaw, Chua Kheng Wee Louis, Foo Seck Guan Kenneth, Gerald Giam, He Ting Ru, Nathaniel Koh, Dr. Jamus Lim, Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, Tan Kong Soon, Dennis Tan Lip Fong, and the seasoned ex-chief Low Thia Khiang.
Lee Li Lian, 46, is known for her tenure as an MP for Punggol East SMC from 2013 to 2015, when she was narrowly defeated by People’s Action Party’s Charles Chong. With the dissolution of Punggol East SMC in the 2020 General Election and its integration into Sengkang GRC—a victory for WP—Lee now serves as a town councillor for Sengkang Town Council. Notably, Low Thia Khiang continues his involvement in the CEC, underlining his enduring influence and mentorship within the Party since passing over leadership duties to Singh in 2018.
The leadership reaffirmation occurs amidst anticipation for upcoming General Elections, required by November 2025, with this unchanged leadership lineup signaling stability and continuity for the Workers’ Party. In the backdrop of a political landscape poised for a crucial electoral battle, the retention of experienced figures along with the infusion of familiar faces like Lee Li Lian aims to fortify WP’s position.
