A Bangladeshi extremist preacher, Amir Hamza, breached Singapore’s security protocols by entering the country under a false identity and delivering an unauthorized sermon filled with extremist and segregationist teachings. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) revealed that despite being aware of Hamza’s background, his biometrics were not on record at the time of his entry into Singapore.
Amir Hamza conducted the illegal sermon on August 9th at the Lantana Lodge dormitory in Tuas, targeting migrant workers without official approval. His sermon propagated dangerous beliefs that posed a threat to Singapore’s communal harmony, as stated by the MHA.
Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam emphasized the need for Singapore to maintain a balance between welcoming travelers and enhancing security measures. While Singapore has previously turned away preachers like Indonesian Abdul Somad Batubara, Amir Hamza managed to evade detection and deliver his sermon before leaving the country on August 10th.
In his sermon, Amir Hamza labeled non-Muslims as “kafir” and praised Bangladeshi extremists associated with terrorist activities. He criticized the previous Bangladeshi government and advocated for the establishment of an Islamic state in Bangladesh. The preacher did not seek proper authorization for his sermon and left Singapore the following day.
Amir Hamza’s radical teachings have garnered attention in Bangladesh, where he has been linked to promoting religious intolerance and violence. His association with the terrorist group Ansar al-Islam (AAI) and his alleged role in influencing a terror suspect further raise concerns over his activities.
The Singapore authorities are thoroughly investigating the organizers of the event and will take stringent action against those found in violation of the country’s laws. The government has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards hate speech and extremism, emphasizing the importance of maintaining security and national harmony.
