Singaporean actor Christopher Lee candidly spoke about a costly mistake: purchasing a robotic cat toy worth more than $800 for his son, Zed. He made the confession during an August press conference for the new Taiwanese series “Q18 Quantum Dice: Allegory of the Quantum.” Although he is cautious about indulging every whim of his 10-year-old, Lee succumbed to buying the high-tech pet thinking it would be a practical middle ground since he felt his son was too young for a real one.
Lee, 53, recounted how he acquired the electronic feline with the hope it would nurture Zed’s love for animals without the responsibilities tied to pet care. He was convinced by the robot’s features which required interaction to mimic life-like behaviors. Despite the hefty price tag, the novelty quickly wore off as the robot cat ended up inert in its charging station.
Not only did the toy fail to live up to expectations, but its whereabouts are now uncertain. Lee said, “I think the electronic cat was a failure.” He described his attempts to utilize the cat’s capabilities, like teaching it to return to its charger, which went unheeded. Lee’s co-star, Tien Hsin, chimed in, considering the robot an innovative way for children to experience pet ownership. Still, Lee now harbors doubts about such purchases.
Despite the setback with the robotic cat purchased a couple of years back, Zed’s love for animals persists. However, Lee and his wife, actress Fann Wong, also 53, have decided to delay getting a dog until Zed is ready for the responsibility. In the meantime, he is content with taking care of fish, which require simpler care.
In terms of parenting, Lee and Wong focus on reasoning rather than corporal punishment. Reflecting on his experiences with child-rearing practices that differ from those of his parents, Lee advocates for an approach based on patience and understanding. Zed’s sense of accountability is something his father takes pride in, emphasizing the importance of recognizing right from wrong over fear of punishment. Christopher and Wong strive to foster an environment where Zed learns from his actions in a supportive atmosphere.
