Marvel has expanded its universe with the introduction of a new mutant, Jitter, a character hailing from Singapore, in its latest X-Men relaunch. Known in her everyday life as Sofia Yong, Jitter was unveiled to fans in a significant way on August 9, coinciding with Singapore’s National Day. She embodies one of the four fresh faces in “The Outliers” team, which graces the pages of “The Uncanny X-Men” series, brought to life by writer Gail Simone and illustrator David Marquez.
The series, which saw its first release on August 7, with a subsequent issue announced for September 11, promises a revitalized take on the classic mutants narrative. Alongside Jitter are other new characters including Becca Constance Simon-Pinette, or Calico; Hotoru, known as Deathdream; and Valentin Correa, portraying Ransom, all of whom were initially teased at July’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Jitter’s extraordinary ability is described as hyper-focus, granting her the prowess to master any skill or talent – a feat that ordinarily requires years of dedication for most. This power, however, comes with a caveat; overexertion leads to an immediate drop in energy levels, necessitating the constant presence of a stopwatch to time her abilities’ usage to just a minute. Thus, in fleeting moments, she can excel as anything from a master martial artist to an expert locksmith.
Issue #2 promises exhilarating encounters, showcasing Jitter and Calico, who shares a psychic bond with her horse, Ember, taking on Gambit, while Wolverine confronts Deathdream and his eerie capabilities.
This is not the first instance of Singapore making an appearance within the Marvel universe. The fictional Southeast Asian island of Madripoor, with inspirations drawn from Singapore, and its underworld controlled by Tyger Tiger, a Singaporean banking heiress, have previously been featured.
The Marvel community has shown keen interest in Jitter’s character, particularly regarding her potential use of the unique colloquial blend known as Singlish. Gail Simone, in response to fans’ curiosity on social media platform X, hinted at minimal but present Singlish usage, opening up the possibility for broader incorporation in the narrative.
This fresh addition by Marvel not only enriches its mutant roster but also signifies a step toward greater representation and cultural diversity in the comic book realm.
