A strong and effective SAF is Singapore’s most important insurance policy: PM Wong
According to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, a strong and effective Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is the Republic’s most crucial insurance policy in an increasingly dangerous and troubled world. Speaking to a group of about 420 recruits, trainers, and staff during a visit to the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on August 27th, PM Wong emphasized the significance of national service as the backbone of this defense system. He expressed gratitude to those who have stepped forward to serve the nation, stating, ‘Every generation of Singaporeans has served national service, and now it’s your turn.’
PM Wong underscored the Government’s commitment to heavy investments in both the SAF and the Home Team, recognizing them as critical pillars of national security. He highlighted the continuous evolution of the SAF in terms of technology and capabilities, stating, ‘The resets and the upgrades and the transformations, in fact, are continually taking place.’
During his visit to BMTC, PM Wong reminisced about his national service experience, emphasizing the legacy of discipline, determination, and resilience instilled through training. He reflected on the personal impact of his military journey, stating, ‘The SAF was the best fitness trainer for me – after BMT, after OCS, I could do 2.4 (in) under 10 minutes.’
PM Wong’s visit also included participation in strength conditioning exercises and rifle technical handling training, reaffirming his support for enhanced training methods and technologies. Stressing the importance of readiness in a volatile global landscape, he highlighted the need for every generation of Singaporeans to uphold the tradition of national service.
PM Wong urged all Singaporeans to support national service and recognize the sacrifices made by national servicemen and their families. He emphasized that maintaining a strong level of support is essential for safeguarding Singapore’s stability, freedom, and role as a beacon of peace in the region.”
