In light of a significant international cybersecurity breach, Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced the decision to uninstall the Mobile Guardian app from student-used personal learning devices. The breach impacted approximately 13,000 students across 26 secondary schools, resulting in a remote wipe of the affected devices.
Mobile Guardian, a device management application, is utilized by students to permit parental oversight over app or website access and screen time. However, after discovering unauthorized access on late Sunday night which thwarted students from accessing apps and stored data on their iPads or Chromebooks, MOE expressed serious concerns to the Mobile Guardian company.
The cybersecurity breach was identified by Mobile Guardian as having global repercussions, infiltrating user accounts worldwide, including those in North America, Europe, and specifically Singapore. This violation led to a small number of devices being unenrolled and remotely cleared. Yet, Mobile Guardian has assured that there was no indication of the hacker accessing user data. In response, Mobile Guardian has temporarily discontinued its services to block any further unauthorized entries.
As a preventive step, the MOE is expediting the removal of the Mobile Guardian application from all iPads and Chromebooks. The MOE is taking prompt action to safely revert devices to regular use and is exploring alternative strategies to help manage device use to facilitate uninterrupted learning.
The MOE has clarified that this incident is separate from the technical difficulties encountered by students at the end of July, which originated from a configuration error by Mobile Guardian.
In response to the breach, the MOE expressed understanding of students’ concerns and has pledged support, including the deployment of additional IT teams to schools and provision of extra learning materials.
This incident follows another breach in April when personal data of parents and school staff members were accessed from 127 schools via a Mobile Guardian data security lapse.
