The police in Singapore are currently investigating a distressing incident involving a student from Bukit View Secondary School who was subjected to bullying as captured in a video that surfaced on social media platform TikTok on Sunday, Sep 15. In the video, a student from BVSS was forcefully kicked in the back by another student, causing them to fall to the ground. The victim can be seen crying out in pain as fellow students look on.
According to the report, the incident took place at an HDB void deck with several other BVSS students present at the scene. Mr. Jaswant Singh, the principal of BVSS, highlighted the school’s zero-tolerance stance on bullying and assured that appropriate actions will be taken against those involved:
“We do not condone bullying, and it takes a serious view of such misbehavior. The incident, which occurred outside of school premises in October 2023, was not reported to the school at the time,” said Mr. Singh.
He further stated that the school is aware of the circulating video and has since reached out to the student to check on their well-being, noting that no injuries were reported at that time. The school will be providing counseling to the students involved and will apply necessary disciplinary measures. Additionally, a police report has been lodged by the victim’s parents, and investigations are currently ongoing.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) emphasized its stand against bullying by highlighting the importance of a safe educational environment and measures to address such incidents. In a statement responding to a parliamentary question, the MOE stated:
“All schools send a clear message to students that bullying is not acceptable and has no place in our schools. Schools monitor the school environment and discipline closely, and take educative, preventive, and intervention measures to address bullying incidents.”
In cases of reported bullying, trained school personnel conduct investigations, offer counseling support to involved students, and determine necessary disciplinary actions accordingly.
