McLaren’s Lando Norris put on a sensational performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing a dominant victory and narrowing the Formula 1 championship lead of Max Verstappen. In an exhilarating race, Norris led from start to finish, showcasing his skill and determination.
Verstappen finished second for Red Bull, trailing behind Norris by a substantial 20.945 seconds. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured a commendable third place in the grueling night race, which spanned over 62 laps under exhausting heat and humidity.
“It was an amazing race… A few too many close calls, I had a couple of close moments in the middle but it was well managed I think. I could push, we were flying the whole race. Still tough, I’m a bit out of breath, but a good one,” expressed Norris, reflecting on his exceptional performance.
Notably, the race witnessed a remarkable absence of safety car deployments, a first in its 15-race history. As a result of this victory, Norris managed to reduce Verstappen’s lead in the title race to 52 points, with six races and three sprints remaining.
Piastri’s stellar third-place finish, coupled with Sergio Perez’s 10th place in the second Red Bull, further solidified McLaren’s position in the constructors’ championship, increasing their lead to 41 points.
Verstappen commented on his race, stating, “My race was just by myself, do the best I could, manage my own race… On a weekend we knew we were going to struggle, P2 is a good achievement. But now we need to improve, and that’s what we’ll do.”
The race also saw Lewis Hamilton, who started on softer tyres, attempting to apply pressure on Verstappen but ultimately struggled due to an early pit stop. Despite the challenges, Norris maintained his lead over Verstappen, eventually clinching a remarkable victory.
In the latter stages of the race, Piastri’s strategic maneuvers enabled him to surpass Hamilton and secure a well-deserved third place, emphasizing, “It was a good race, a good recovery from qualifying – it wasn’t my best afternoon yesterday… Big thank you to the team as clearly the car was exceptional this weekend, and some great points.”
In the closing laps, Hamilton’s older tyres left him vulnerable, resulting in him losing another position to Charles Leclerc. The intense race concluded with Norris emerging triumphant, marking his third career Grand Prix win and a significant milestone in the F1 championship race.
