A 31-year-old man was apprehended on Monday (Sep 16) after biting a police officer while trying to evade arrest, the police revealed in an official statement.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) reported that the man was initially observed driving recklessly on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway around 1:25 am by traffic police officers on patrol. When signaled to pull over, the man chose to speed away, successfully avoiding the officers’ pursuit. Subsequently, he ran a red light and crashed his vehicle into a metal pole along Punggol Central.
The man attempted to flee on foot, but the pursuing officers managed to intercept him. During the altercation, as the officers were attempting to restrain him, the man bit one of the officers on his left arm. Despite the resistance, the officer was able to subdue and arrest the man with the assistance of other officers.
“A search was conducted on the man. Drug paraphernalia was found in his possession,” confirmed the police.
Further investigations unveiled that the man was wanted by the authorities for allegedly exchanging his Singpass credentials for cash in February. Per the police, he had provided his Singpass login details to an unidentified individual, although the offender’s attempts to open bank accounts were unsuccessful.
The bitten 26-year-old officer sustained a bruise on his left arm, received medical treatment, and was granted two days of medical leave.
The offender is scheduled to be charged on Tuesday with “voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty,” as well as contravening the Computer Misuse Act for revealing his Singpass details. Additionally, he will face charges related to dangerous driving, operating a vehicle without a valid license, and using a motor vehicle without proper insurance coverage.
Ongoing assessments by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) are being pursued concerning the alleged drug-related offenses.
“The police have zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence against police officers and will not hesitate to take firm action,” the police asserted in a statement. “Traffic police also take a serious view of motorists who drive without valid licenses. Motorists who choose to flout traffic laws will face dire consequences.”
