“A guide to help platform workers understand what to look for when renting vehicles is now available. The guide also includes information on what to do when involved in an accident,” stated the latest release from the NTUC Freelancers and Self-Employed Unit (U FSE).
On September 2, 2024, at Orchid Country Club, U FSE introduced the “Guide on Interpreting Vehicle Leasing Agreements” in collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Enterprise Singapore (ESG). This comprehensive guide aims to empower platform workers by providing insights into essential leasing terms, enabling them to make informed decisions and secure better rental deals.
According to the guide, crucial aspects such as insurance coverage, termination clauses, and dispute resolution are covered to equip drivers with the knowledge necessary to avoid common pitfalls and comprehend their rights. Practical advice on vehicle inspections and accident procedures is also included.
NTUC U FSE Director Jean See emphasized the importance of the guide in the evolving landscape of platform work, affirming NTUC’s commitment to offering cutting-edge resources to its members. She mentioned, “The guide is a significant step in empowering platform workers who rely on leased vehicles with the knowledge to make informed decisions and protect their interests when entering into leasing agreements.”
The guide’s benefits extend directly to members of NTUC-affiliated associations, including the National Taxi Association (NTA), the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA), and the National Delivery Champions Association (NDCA).
In conjunction with the guide launch, NTUC LawWorks, a collaboration between NTUC and Pro Bono SG, hosted a dialogue event featuring Assistant Secretary-General Patrick Tay and Bozy Lu, Partner at Han & Lu Law Chambers LLP. The dialogue focused on fair contract terms, insurance tiers, and a deeper understanding of the vehicle leasing market to offer practical solutions for platform workers renting vehicles.
