Rain, rain go away…
Singapore experienced strong winds on Tuesday, with reports of fallen trees in various locations. A Bishan resident described the sudden change in weather, stating, “Winds started whipping up without warning. A lot of crashing as shelves and anything unsecured were tossed around and blown over. People actually hunkered down in shops for a few minutes because on the corridors it was way too windy and dangerous.” The aftermath of the strong winds was evident in photos showing fallen trees in areas such as Bishan, Yishun, and Xilin Avenue in Bedok. Additionally, broken glass was spotted along the road outside UOB Plaza 2 at Raffles Place. UOB acknowledged the incident in a Facebook post, ensuring that the affected area was cordoned off for the public’s safety and reporting no injuries.
The Meteorological Service Singapore had previously issued a warning about the persisting monsoon conditions in Singapore and the surrounding region. According to the agency, low-level winds from the south or west are expected on most days, with Sumatra squalls possibly bringing widespread thundery showers and gusty winds during the pre-dawn hours and morning. The forecast also includes heavier rainfall in the latter half of the fortnight, with thundery showers expected on most afternoons. The Met Service mentioned that the total rainfall for the second half of the month is anticipated to be above average over most parts of the island.
The current weather situation in Singapore can be attributed to the forecasted monsoon conditions. The Met Service advised caution and preparedness for the anticipated weather patterns, stating, “Sumatra squalls may bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds during the pre-dawn hours and morning on a few days. More rainfall is forecast in the latter half of the fortnight, with thundery showers expected on most afternoons. The thundery showers could be widespread and heavy on some of these days.”
