Caterer Fined for Gastroenteritis Outbreak at MindChamps Preschools

Caterer Slapped with Fine for Causing Gastroenteritis Outbreak at MindChamps Preschools

A caterer who supplied food to eight MindChamps preschools in May last year has been fined S$1,200 (US$920) after more than 100 people fell ill. The caterer, Nosh Cuisine, was fined for a “food safety lapse,” said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Wednesday.

“Between May 22 and May 29 last year, SFA and the Ministry of Health (MOH) received reports of gastroenteritis from eight MindChamps preschools,” stated the report. A total of 107 people, including 96 children and 11 staff members, reported symptoms of gastroenteritis after consuming food prepared by the company. Eight individuals required hospitalization but have since been discharged, as confirmed by SFA on Wednesday.

Following a joint inspection by SFA and MOH officers at Nosh Cuisine’s premises, it was found that the company had failed to maintain proper cleanliness. The incident affected three MindChamps preschools in Bishan, Changi Airport, and Tanglin. As a result, SFA suspended the food business operations of Nosh Cuisine, which was later lifted on July 27, 2023, after the company demonstrated compliance with the required measures.

In response to the incident, SFA emphasized the importance of cleanliness and adherence to food hygiene and safety standards by all food establishments. The authority reiterated, “SFA will not hesitate to take firm action against anyone found to be in violation of the Environmental Public Health Act.” Offenders can face fines of up to S$2,000, with further penalties for continuing offenses.

“All food establishments should ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained, as well as adhere to proper food hygiene and food safety requirements,” stated SFA on Wednesday.
