The first day of the trial of Pritam Singh has revealed shocking details surrounding allegations of lies and manipulation within the Workers’ Party. As reported by Channel News Asia, the prosecution’s case against Singh revolves around his involvement in managing former party member Raeesah Khan’s dishonesty, leading to a trial with far-reaching implications for Singapore’s political landscape.
The prosecution alleged that Singh manipulated Khan to conceal her lie about accompanying a rape victim to a police station. The statement made by the prosecution detailed the events leading up to the trial, highlighting Singh’s actions and influence on Khan:
“Singh had first discovered that her anecdote about accompanying the rape victim was untrue in a phone call with Ms Khan on Aug 7, 2021. A day later, Singh met with Ms Khan, Ms Lim, and Mr Faisal Manap at Singh’s home. They first discussed the fallout from Ms Khan’s speech on Muslim issues before moving to the issue of Ms Khan’s lie.”
In addition, the prosecution presented a list of key witnesses, including former WP chief Low Thia Khiang, and close confidantes of Khan, Ms Loh Pei Ying and Mr Yudhishthra Nathan, during their opening statements. The prosecution claimed that Singh directed Khan to maintain her lie and even guided her on how to respond if the issue arose in parliament.
Raeesah Khan’s Testimony
On the stand, Raeesah Khan revealed compelling insights into her interactions with Pritam Singh and the events leading up to the trial. Channel News Asia highlighted Khan’s emotional disclosure about Singh revealing private details without her consent:
“She broke down at one point when revealing that Singh had revealed details about her sexual assault – that she had not told even her own parents – without her permission.”
Additionally, Khan shared her side of the story regarding the manipulation she experienced, stating:
“Ms Khan testified about how ‘terrified’ she felt that her lie would be exposed – mainly because she would have to share her own account of sexual assault, which she had kept private to herself, her husband, and a therapist.”
Khan’s testimony shed light on the intricate dynamics within the Workers’ Party, unveiling a complex web of loyalty, fear, and personal integrity. As the trial progresses, the revelations from both the prosecution and the witnesses are poised to reshape the narrative surrounding Pritam Singh’s leadership and accountability within the political sphere in Singapore.
