Drink Stall Assistant Dies After Altercation with Patron

Fatal Altercation at Drink Stall: Tragic Result of Confrontation

A private-hire driver, Eng Chee Hong, has been charged with the death of a drink stall assistant, Mr Dao Van Chien, following a tragic incident in Jurong. Reports indicate that the confrontation led to Mr Chien hitting his head against the concrete floor, causing severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.

Eng, who pleaded guilty to causing hurt resulting in grievous harm, was also charged with drink driving while out on bail for the initial offence. The sequence of events unfolded on New Year’s Eve, where a celebratory night took a devastating turn at a coffee shop in Jurong East Street 31.

According to witnesses, Eng noticed Mr Chien becoming increasingly intoxicated at a KTV lounge and tried to intervene. Despite his efforts to calm the situation, a heated exchange ensued, with Eng eventually striking Mr Chien, causing him to fall and sustain fatal injuries. Eng then left the scene without offering assistance, driving away to continue his night elsewhere.

Upon discovering the injured Mr Chien, his colleague rushed him to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries days later. During the legal proceedings, the court learned of Eng’s previous convictions, including violent offences. Eng’s defense highlighted his efforts to contribute to the victim’s funeral expenses and his personal circumstances, including caring for a terminally ill mother and a young son.

The sentencing for Eng is pending, with a potential jail term and driving ban being sought by the prosecution. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of impulsive actions and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and families involved.
