Former Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) CEO, Mike Jeffries, along with his partner Matthew Smith and middleman James Jacobson, have been arrested for alleged involvement in an international sex trafficking and prostitution business. The charges involve numerous men, and the case has gained significant attention due to the high profile nature of the individuals involved. An FBI investigation was launched after claims of sexual exploitation and abuse at events hosted by Jeffries and Smith at various global locations.
U.S. attorney Breon Peace, as reported by BBC, alleged that “over the two decades he was in charge, Jeffries would use his wealth and CEO status ‘to traffick men for his own sexual pleasure’.” The prosecution claims that Jeffries, Smith, and Jacobson recruited men worldwide, some as young as 19 years old, for potentially exploitative purposes.
The indictment mentions 15 victims, but prosecutors allege that the operation encompassed dozens of men. Some individuals involved claimed to be misled about the nature of the events, while others felt pressured to participate due to non-disclosure agreements. Peace emphasized the significant impact of such actions on young individuals aspiring to careers in fashion and entertainment, stating, “To anyone who thinks they can exploit and coerce others by using the so-called casting couch system, this case should serve as a warning.”
The severity of the charges is reflected in the potential penalties, with the accused facing possible life sentences and mandatory minimum 15-year prison terms for the sex trafficking charges, as well as up to 20 years in prison for the interstate prostitution charges. Jeffries, a prominent figure who led A&F from 1992 to 2014, played a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s image, characterized by cologne-filled stores and sexually-charged advertising.
