A 37-year-old man wanted for drug trafficking was apprehended in Malaysia and subsequently deported to Singapore on Sunday (Oct 20) following seven years as a fugitive.
The individual was wanted in connection with multiple instances of drug trafficking and other drug-related offenses committed between 2014 and 2024, according to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).
“In 2014, the Singaporean was initially arrested and charged with three counts of drug trafficking and one count of drug consumption. However, he was subsequently released on bail,” revealed CNB in a news release on Monday.
Following his failure to attend court on Jun 12, 2017, an arrest warrant was issued against him, and he was also sought by the police in relation to two cases of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and cheating by impersonation.
The breakthrough came when the suspect was apprehended in Malaysia on Oct 1 by the country’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Department for criminal and immigration offenses. After being deported to Singapore, he was arrested by CNB on the same day.
“Drug traffickers thinking to evade our law by hiding overseas will find that there is no safe haven,” expressed Senior Assistant Commissioner Leon Chan, acting director of CNB. SAC Chan also highlighted the close cooperation between CNB and its Malaysian counterparts as pivotal in capturing the fugitive.
CNB continues investigations into the other cases of drug trafficking, signaling that the pursuit of justice for these offenses remains ongoing.
