A 50-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to 21 weeks in jail for engaging in voyeurism and possessing altered intimate videos that would humiliate his wife’s niece. The victim, who was 23 at the time of the offenses, cannot be named due to gag orders protecting her identity.
According to the article, the man initially became curious about his wife’s niece’s activities in the toilet amid frequent arguments with his wife. He proceeded to set up hidden cameras in the niece’s toilet on multiple occasions, capturing private moments such as showering, using the toilet, and changing. The victim discovered the cameras, leading to the man’s arrest.
The prosecution sought a jail term of 24 to 29 weeks for the man, highlighting the severity of the violation especially given his relationship with the victim. The man admitted to using his design skills to superimpose the victim’s face onto pornographic videos, indicating a disturbing level of invasion of privacy.
The man’s lawyers presented his struggles with mental health issues, citing an adjustment disorder with a depressed mood as a contributing factor to his actions. They requested a reduced jail term of 15 weeks, emphasizing the impact of the offenses on his personal and professional life.
In response to the defense’s plea, the man was allowed to start his jail term on November 15. The court acknowledged the gravity of the offense and the need for accountability, especially considering the significant breach of trust and privacy that occurred.
