In a communication posted by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, PM Lawrence Wong expressed his congratulations to the newly appointed Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba. Ishiba emerged victorious in a closely contested battle last week to lead the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan. The nation’s parliament officially declared the 67-year-old as the Prime Minister earlier on Tuesday.
In his letter to Ishiba, PM Wong highlighted the LDP’s faith in Ishiba’s leadership, stating, “The victory reflects the LDP’s confidence in you.” Wong underscored the strong and long-standing relations between Singapore and Japan, emphasizing cooperation in diverse fields such as the economy, defense, start-ups, innovation, security, and crisis management during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We appreciate Japan’s significant contributions in supporting the rules-based international order,” Wong added. “As country coordinator for ASEAN-Japan relations, Singapore is fully committed to strengthening their cooperation.”
Mr. Wong also took the opportunity to address the former Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, stating “You have brought about growth in real wages, boosted Japan’s security capabilities, and broadened Japan’s cooperation with other countries.” He praised Kishida for his leadership during various high-profile events like the G7 Hiroshima Summit in 2023 and the strengthening of ASEAN-Japan relations.
The relations between Singapore and Japan have flourished under Kishida’s administration, with enhanced cooperation in economy, startups, digitalization, green initiatives, and defense. As both nations prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2026, PM Wong expressed optimism for continued collaboration to further strengthen the bond between Singapore and Japan.
