If you’re a private-hire driver, taxi driver, or delivery rider, you’ve probably heard about the new Platform Workers Bill that was passed in Parliament on 10 September 2024.
Starting 1 January 2025, big changes are kicking in to better protect platform workers like you. This is thanks to NTUC’s efforts to push for more support and representation for you.
You might be wondering: “What does this mean for me? How will it affect my work?”
Why Does This Matter for You?
For a long time, platform workers have been stuck in the middle—neither employees nor freelancers. This meant no CPF contributions from platform companies, no proper injury benefits, and difficulties in voicing, your concerns.
Without these, you may struggle to plan for housing, healthcare, or retirement. This law is about fixing that and making sure you’re treated fairly.
Here’s how the Bill is going to help you and where you can find more information.
Better Protection for Platform Workers
This new law brings better protection for you in three major ways:
- A Stronger Voice Through Representation
Have you ever felt alone and unheard when raising a dispute or issue at work? The new law will set up Platform Work Associations (PWAs), where platform can rally together, get support, and negotiate for better terms with the companies. - Injury Protection
If you’ve ever worried about what happens if you get injured while working, you’ll now have proper work injury compensation, just like salaried employees. This can help cover medical bills or lost income if you need time off to recover - Retirement Savings (CPF Contributions)
From next year, both you and the platform companies (like Grab, Gojek, or food delivery services) will need to contribute to CPF. This means more savings in your CPF accounts to help you buy a home or prepare for retirement.
What Are PWAs, and Why Should You Join?
The Platform Work Associations are similar to a union for platform workers to tackle shared issues with a bigger voice. Whether you’re struggling with unfair treatment, workplace disputes, or improving working conditions, the PWAs will support and advocate for you.
To learn more about PWAs, join the briefing sessions by NTUC on these dates:

Why Attend the Briefing Sessions?
The new law is a big change, and it’s important to understand how it will affect your day-to-day work. The NTUC briefing sessions will answer all your questions, like:
- How do I join a PWA?
- What happens if I get injured?
- How much CPF will I need to contribute?
It’s also a great chance to meet other platform workers and learn how you can make the most of these new benefits.
The new Platform Workers Bill is a step forward for everyone in the gig economy. It’s about making sure you’re protected, respected, and supported as you do your work.
