That’s inspirational…🥳🥳🥳
Singapore kitefoiler Max Maeder has clinched the inaugural Young World Sailor of the Year title at the 2024 World Sailing Awards, marking a historic achievement for the Singaporean sailing community. The 18-year-old emerged victorious ahead of strong competition from Italy’s Vittorio Bonifacio, Australia’s Grae Morris, and Denmark’s Magnus Overbeck.
Upon receiving the prestigious award at a ceremony held at CHIJMES Hall in Singapore, Maeder expressed his elation, exclaiming, “I’m bubbly, I’m happy, and I have a big smile on my face, as you can see.” He continued to emphasize the significance of World Sailing’s recognition of young sailors, stating, “It’s great to encourage and invigorate and have a milestone like that, and I’m so happy, I feel privileged to be able to receive the award tonight.”
The homegrown talent emphasized the meaningful nature of winning the award on home soil, expressing, “Being able to bring it … to Singapore, the award, and to have (the ceremony) in Singapore is great to see, and I was so happy when I heard that they are holding it here this year, so it’s great to experience it tonight.”
In a light-hearted pledge, Maeder playfully reiterated an earlier promise, declaring, “I am a man of my word – I will work at the curry puff store,” in reference to working a shift at Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff in Katong, following his victory.
Maeder’s recent accomplishments include securing bronze at the Paris Olympics, clinching the 2024 IKA KiteFoil World Series, and winning the open event at the Formula Kite Youth European Championships, highlighting his exceptional form and skill in the sport.
The male and female Young World Sailor of the Year categories were open to any sailor under the age of 21, and Maeder’s triumph represents a significant milestone for both himself and the Singaporean sailing community. This isn’t the first time Maeder has been recognized on the global stage; in 2023, he received a nomination for Male Sailor of the Year, showcasing his consistent excellence in the sailing world.
The award and Maeder’s achievements are a testament to the burgeoning talent within Singapore’s sailing scene and serve as an inspiration for aspiring young sailors.
