Metal Rod Falls from Jurong MRT Track Due to ‘Material Fatigue’

Metal Rod Mishap at Jurong MRT

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has confirmed that a metal rod fell from the Jurong Region Line (JRL) MRT track onto a Jurong traffic junction due to ‘material fatigue.’ In a video captured and posted on Facebook by SG Road Vigilante, the incident took place on October 3 at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Jalan Bahar.

According to the posted video, several vehicles were making a right turn at the junction when the metal rod dropped from the unfinished MRT track. The rod narrowly missed a truck, falling next to a white van that had to stop briefly before cautiously continuing its journey.

LTA responded to inquiries and stated that components of the elevated track section of the JRL fell onto the road below, resulting from ‘material fatigue’ and the fracture of the metal rod. The authority further mentioned that no construction work was ongoing during the incident, and luckily, no injuries or property damage were reported.

“Preliminary investigations showed that its cause was ‘material fatigue’ and fracture of the metal rod,” shared LTA in response to the incident.

Engineers have inspected the elevated track and verified its safety. LTA has also implemented additional safety measures at the construction site to prevent similar incidents. During the safety evaluation period, LTA emphasized the importance of safety procedures and reporting systems to all workers.

LTA assured the public that the safety of the elevated track has been confirmed, stating they are “working with the general contractor to conduct comprehensive inspections of other JRL construction sites to prevent similar accidents from happening again.”
