Singtel Fights Off Cyber Threat from Chinese Hacking Group ‘Volt Typhoon

Singtel Detects and "Eradicates" Malware from Chinese Hacking Group Volt Typhoon

Singtel recently detected and “eradicated” malware believed to be from a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group. In response to a Bloomberg report linking them to the hacking group Volt Typhoon, Singtel confirmed their detection and mitigation efforts. The incident, discovered in June, was part of a broader campaign targeting telecommunications companies and critical infrastructure globally. Singtel stated, “Like any other large organisation and key infrastructure service provider around the world, we are constantly probed.”

The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) indicated that while no services were affected and no data loss was reported, “In this case, early detection and mitigation measures were in place.” Singtel’s efforts resulted in the successful neutralization of the threat, with the overall telecommunications infrastructure deemed secure.

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, U.S. officials previously confronted the Chinese government regarding a cyber espionage campaign involving Volt Typhoon. The operation targeted critical American infrastructure entities and was seen as a potential threat in future geopolitical conflicts. Chinese authorities, however, have refuted these claims.

With cybersecurity at the forefront of their operations, Singtel emphasized the importance of network resilience and collaboration with security partners. They continuously review and enhance their cybersecurity capabilities to protect their critical assets from evolving threats.
