SPH Media Restructures Technology Division, Impacts 10% of Workforce

SPH Media Announces Layoffs in Technology Division; Promises Support for Affected Employees

SPH Media has recently laid off 34 employees from its technology division, representing about 10% of the workforce in that division. According to The Straits Times, the company made this decision as part of a restructuring effort to adapt to the evolving media landscape. A company spokesperson stated, “To remain competitive and sustainable amidst the changing media landscape, SPH Media has restructured its technology team. This includes streamlining its operations and resourcing across different technology functions.”

In a response to queries, the company assured that they had carefully considered various alternatives before making the decision. The spokesperson emphasized SPH Media’s commitment to providing affected employees with comprehensive severance packages, career coaching, job placement assistance, and counseling support to facilitate their transition.

Chief Operating Officer Loh Yuh Yiing and Chief Technology Officer Kaythaya Maw informed staff via email that the layoffs were necessary due to the need to streamline various functions in the technology division. Ms. Loh highlighted the company’s digital transformation efforts over the past three years, which necessitated significant investment in technology. However, she noted that the company could not sustain this level of investment beyond 2024.

Ms. Loh acknowledged the challenges faced by media companies globally, citing declining revenue and rising costs. She stated, “SPH too, faces similar pressures to find a sustainable way forward.” While she mentioned that there were no immediate plans for further layoffs, she emphasized the need for regular review and resource optimization.

SPH Media, a unionized organization under the Creative Media and Publishing Union (CMPU), collaborated closely with the union to ensure fair treatment for affected members. The CMPU confirmed that efforts were made to explore alternative options, including redeployment to suitable positions. Union representatives and support agencies were present at SPH Media to offer job matching and career advisory support for displaced workers. The union also highlighted access to training course fee offsets and financial assistance programs for affected members facing difficulties.

Representatives from CMPU and the National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute were at SPH Media on Monday to offer job matching and career advisory support and resources for the displaced workers, said CMPU.

Affected union members have access to a fund to offset training course fees if they need skills upgrading, the union added.

“CMPU will also assist members who may face financial hardship via various assistance programmes.”

Overall, the restructuring within the technology division reflects SPH Media’s commitment to adapting to industry changes while providing necessary support for impacted employees.
