The Paya Lebar area witnessed an unprecedented temperature surge on 7 December, breaking the existing December record set back in 2016. The National Environment Agency (NEA) confirmed this milestone as they reported, “The temperature reached 36.2Ā°C at Paya Lebar last Saturday (7 Dec).”
Following a notably rainy November, the weather conditions in December have veered drastically towards the opposite end of the spectrum, with high temperatures dominating the landscape. NEA highlighted, “The dry weather was accompanied by high temperatures, culminating in the highest daily maximum temperature ever recorded in Singapore for the month of December.” The previous record of 35.9Ā°C, established on 6 December 2016, was comfortably surpassed by the new high in Paya Lebar.
The onset of December welcomed a “wet start,” only to transition into a period of scant rainfall, allowing the mercury to soar in the neighborhood. Notably, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) forecasted “fine weather” for the initial week of December, setting the stage for the climatic extremities witnessed in the month.
In a complete turnaround from the intense rainfall experienced in November, which broke records since 1980, the island is now bracing for a wetter week ahead. According to NEA, the coming days will bring thundery showers in the afternoon on most days, ensuring that the first half of December registers rainfall levels “near average” across the island.
