The Red Planet is set to dazzle observers in Singapore on Thursday (Jan 16), making its brightest appearance since December 2022. The astronomical phenomenon known as Mars in opposition will take place, as Earth aligns directly between Mars and the sun. The Observatory at Science Centre Singapore highlighted that during this event, Mars will be at its closest to Earth for the year, fully illuminated by the sun. The Red Planet was last in opposition on December 8, 2022, and the next occurrences will be on February 19, 2027, and March 25, 2029.
As the event unfolds, Mars will start rising around 7:30 pm on January 16, reaching an easily observable height by 8:30 pm when the sky darkens. The peak viewing time will be around 1 am on January 17.
The Observatory recommends that individuals in Singapore take advantage of clear skies to witness Mars in opposition. While the planet will be visible from various locations, the best spots to appreciate an unobstructed view include open public areas like Marina Barrage, East Coast Park, and the Southern Ridges.
In describing the viewing experience, the observatory shared, “During opposition, Mars is closest to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter.” With the naked eye, observers can expect Mars to appear as a “reddish star,” enhancing the celestial spectacle set to unfold on January 16.
