The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has issued a strong reminder to all contractors and construction workers to prioritize safety as the Chinese New Year period approaches. This plea comes in the wake of a tragic incident at the Plantation Edge I & II Build-to-Order (BTO) project construction site in Tengah, where a 29-year-old Indian national lost his life.
According to MOM, the fatal accident occurred on January 2 when the victim was struck in the chest by the hose of a concrete pump truck while carrying out casting works at the construction site. Despite being rushed to Gleneagles Hospital, the worker succumbed to his injuries. He was employed by Keong Hong Construction, the company awarded the main contract for the Tengah Plantation project.
Expressing deep concern, MOM emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and strict adherence to safety measures, especially given the time pressures typically faced by companies during the upcoming festive period. The incident is currently under investigation, and MOM has pledged to maintain rigorous enforcement efforts to ensure workplace safety at all times.
In response to the tragedy, Keong Hong Construction has temporarily halted operations at the worksite as they await the completion of MOM’s investigation. The company has also assured that they are reevaluating their safety protocols and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Additionally, they have taken steps to support the victim’s family, including providing financial assistance during this difficult time.
As the project developer, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) has also stepped forward, expressing deep concern for the welfare of the victim’s family and affirming their commitment to working with industry partners to enhance workplace safety.
In a statement, HDB underscored the gravity of the incident, stating, “Safety at our worksites is of utmost priority, and we are working with the building contractor to assist the authorities with their investigations on this matter.”
This tragic loss has served as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of maintaining strict safety standards in the construction industry. MOM’s proactive stance underscores the imperative need for unwavering diligence in upholding workplace safety regulations, especially during periods of heightened activity in the industry.
