NParks Issues Warning to Public Regarding Crocodile Sighting near Yishun Dam

NParks Urges Public Caution After Crocodile Sighting Near Yishun Dam

NParks has advised the public to exercise caution and keep a safe distance in case of encountering a crocodile, following a recent sighting near Yishun Dam. According to National Parks Board (NParks) group director of wildlife management How Choon Beng, NParks was notified of the crocodile sighting on Jan 6.

Mr. How mentioned, “We are monitoring the sighting and have placed advisory signs around the area to warn the public to stay away from the water’s edge.” He also emphasized, “The public should not approach, provoke or feed crocodiles.”

The species of crocodile believed to be involved is the estuarine crocodile, or Crocodylus porosus, typically found in the Strait of Johor. Known to feed on fish, mammals, birds, and carrion, this species generally resides in water or mudflats away from visitor paths.

Referring to a video posted on Instagram by @sgfollowsall on Jan 6, showing the crocodile swimming near the edge of a canal close to Yishun Dam, Mr. How added, “We have also shared advisories with kayaking operators and stakeholders to stay clear of the waters.”

In a similar incident in July 2024, an estuarine crocodile was observed swimming in the vicinity of Yishun Dam. NParks encourages reporting any encounters with crocodiles to them at 1800-476-1600.

With additional reporting by Fatimah Mujibah, the public is reminded to remain vigilant and avoid any interactions with these reptiles.
