The People’s Action Party (PAP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP) have recently been embroiled in a heated dispute over claims of harassment and intimidation during walkabouts in the Bukit Gombak area.
According to Mr. S Nallakaruppan, a former PSP candidate, incidents of harassment occurred when PSP members were distributing flyers in Goodview Gardens and were allegedly followed and filmed by individuals associated with the PAP. In response, Member of Parliament Ms. Low Yen Ling contended that the situation was misrepresented by PSP, stating that the conflict arose when a PSP member physically assaulted and slandered Male Volunteer 1 and Male Volunteer 2.
In a Facebook post, Ms. Low recounted the confrontations, citing instances of physical intimidation, derogatory remarks, and invasive filming by PSP members towards PAP volunteers. She expressed concern over the doxxing of female PAP volunteers and revealed that some volunteers are receiving counseling due to the distress caused by these incidents. Despite considering filing a police report, PAP refrained from doing so and hoped for better conduct from PSP in the future.
PSP’s chairman, Tan Cheng Bock, condemned the behavior of certain individuals who allegedly harassed PSP volunteers, including a man in black who intruded into the personal space of a female PSP volunteer, leading her to file a police report. Following these events, police investigations are currently underway, and efforts have been made to obtain CCTV footage from the area where the altercation occurred.
Through these events, a critical examination of the interactions between political parties and their volunteers has been brought to light, emphasizing the importance of respectful engagement and responsible conduct in the midst of differing ideologies.
