Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States for a second term.
In a letter dated Monday (Jan 20), President Tharman expressed, “On behalf of the people of Singapore, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your inauguration as the 47th President of the United States of America.” He emphasized the importance of Mr. Trump’s leadership in addressing global challenges and opportunities, stating, “The US continues to be a source of dynamism, resilience and innovation, and with much promise ahead.”
Highlighting the strong bilateral ties between the two countries, Mr. Tharman noted, “Our ties are characterized by mutual respect and cooperation, and we have worked well together to advance the common interests of both our peoples.” He also mentioned the significant achievements in the countries’ relationship during Mr. Trump’s previous term and expressed readiness to further enhance economic and defense ties.
In a separate letter to Mr. Trump, Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the US’s crucial role in global stability and security, expressing confidence in continued strong leadership under Mr. Trump. He emphasized Singapore’s commitment as a trusted friend and partner, stating, “As we work together to advance our shared interests.”
Mr. Wong highlighted the robust defense cooperation between Singapore and the US, citing the Strategic Framework Agreement and the close collaboration in security and counterterrorism efforts. He also mentioned Singapore’s unique contribution to the Defeat-ISIS coalition, showcasing the strong military ties between the two nations.
This reiteration of support and partnership from Singapore’s leaders reflects the commitment to strengthening the relationship between the two nations for mutual progress and shared prosperity.
