Singapore Passes Landmark Anti-Discrimination Bill for Workers

Singapore Enacts Game-Changing Anti-Discrimination Law for Workers

Singapore’s Parliament recently approved a groundbreaking anti-discrimination bill aimed at safeguarding workers from bias in the workplace. The lengthy discussions preceding the passage of the Workplace Fairness Bill brought to light various concerns and suggestions to refine the legislation and broaden its scope.

While the bill received unanimous support from Members of Parliament, questions were raised regarding the specific “protected characteristics” outlined in the bill. It was noted that the bill currently addresses discrimination based on age, nationality, race, and gender, among other traits, but exclusions like those related to sexual orientation and gender identity sparked further debate and prompted calls for inclusivity.

One notable advocate for workers’ rights, NTUC assistant secretary-general, Patrick Tay, has been a staunch proponent of creating a level playing field for workers over the past decade. Highlighting the significance of the bill, he underscored the Labour Movement’s longstanding push for fair access to quality job opportunities, particularly for professionals, managers, and executives (PMEs), which the bill now guarantees.

Throughout the parliamentary sessions, concerns were also raised about ageism, discrimination by association, and the necessity of addressing discrimination towards individuals based on their religious practices. Government responses emphasized a commitment to combatting workplace discrimination and ensuring that all workers are protected under the law.

The Workplace Fairness Bill is set to become effective in 2026 or 2027 and is expected to usher in a new era of employment practices that champion fairness and equal treatment for all workers.

In the words of Patrick Tay, “We have been advocating for a level playing field for workers… We have called for fair access to good work opportunities for professionals, managers, and executives, which this Bill ensures.”
