S’pore actor Laurence Pang was recently deceived by a woman he met on a dating website, leading to a loss of S$35,000. The 78-year-old actor shared his harrowing experience with Philippine Senator Raffy Tulfo on the “Raffy Tulfo in Action” program. Mr. Pang disclosed that the woman, known as “Mika,” was introduced to him through the dating site PinaLove, with whom he engaged in online conversations. Despite Mika’s striking profile photos, Laurence Pang later discovered they were all fake. Although he only video called her once and saw her actual appearance, he felt deceived by her misrepresentation. The actor was manipulated into reselling products on a counterfeit online platform. Initially led to believe he was reselling products on the reputable Japanese platform Rakuten, he later realized he was ensnared in a scheme when he couldn’t withdraw his profits due to continuous pending orders. Mr. Pang suspected that the influx of fake customer orders was orchestrated to prevent his withdrawal attempts. Even after removing his products from the platform, they were mysteriously reinstated, exacerbating his financial losses.
Investigations revealed that Mr. Pang had been scammed of approximately S$35,000, including a substantial investment in cryptocurrency. Lieutenant Wallen Mae Arancillo of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group confirmed that this was a classic case of a romance scam, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in online interactions. She warned the public about the prevalence of scammers using fake personas to deceive individuals into investing in cryptocurrency. As Mr. Pang’s ordeal serves as a cautionary tale, the audience is urged to exercise caution and awareness during their online engagements to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
